Writing Your Cosmetology Resume

Your cosmetology resume is one of the most important things you can have when it comes to finding a job or being accepted into a cosmetology program or academy. It will determine how other people in your industry or profession see you and it can make the difference between being accepted or passed over for a job, position, or other opportunity. Your resume can also be the ticket to getting you in contact with important people in your field, or to providing you with chances to take your career to new heights and platforms that may not have been possible if it weren't for your professional and clean looking resume. For this very reason it’s important to always have a copy of your resume with you at all times just in case someone important happens to be nearby and could use a way to remember and distinguish you.

A basic cosmetology recipe can look like any other. It can have all of your work history on it, where you have gone to school, any additional training you have received, mentors or other professionals that you have worked with and a long list of references to wrap it all up nicely. This makes it look like any professional business resume that someone might use to apply at an office. You’ve got your name and all your contact information on there and it looks nice, clean, and neat. One of the problems with using such a basic resume is that not only does it not stand out but it doesn’t let itself well to the profession. Yes, such a resume, might get you into another training program or let you work as a shampooer at a salon but if you really want to advance in your career then you need to take some bigger steps to be sure that salon owners and other stylists you may want to work with. This kind of a resume just doesn’t stand out enough to potential employers, investors, and so forth in such a way that they are really compelled to start working with you and unfortunately in the cosmetology industry being able to demonstrate your sense of style and beauty is what really matters. If your resume doesn’t stand out and look nice then why would anyone ever hire you to make other peoples hair and skin and nails look nice?

The best way to go about this is to make sure that your resume looks not only professional but beautiful as well. This doesn’t mean you should paint a watercolor on it or print it on flowery paper, just a slightly tinted paper with a clean font, a professional letterhead or monogram and other such details can make a big difference. Steer clear of  fancy curly fonts which look immature and are difficult to read. Make it a point to still be professional while also being current and elegant. Consider including a portfolio or other kind of examples of your work to be sure that a potential employer can see your abilities.

Keep your resume updated and good-looking and you’ll be much better off when it comes to getting jobs!
