What Do Beauticians Do
Working As A Cosmetologist
For a lot of people it’s a dream to go to beauty school, learn how to do hair and nails and makeup, and spend their working time helping people look and feel beautiful. While this is absolutely true and being a cosmetologist is a great way to be able to interact with people that way it is also a very intense job that requires a lot of knowledge, schooling, and dedication. It’s also a very popular industry and while it is growing and there are plenty of jobs there is also a lot of competition. Cosmetologists also must go to a cosmetology school and earn a state license. Cosmetology schools can be expensive and time consuming as well but they are a requirement to be able to work and have a license as a cosmetologist.
If you’ve decided to be a cosmetologist it’s helpful to have an idea of what an average working day might be like once you have your license and are out working in a job. Most people that go to cosmetology school will specialize in a certain are like hair, nails, skin, or makeup and then pursue that field more than any of the others but some people like to offer more than one service and make do a bit of everything. Hairstylists are the most common and will spend the large majority of their day shampooing, cutting, and styling hair for people - either clients or walk ins, and do spend a lot of time on their feet. They may also do things like coloring, perms or permanent straightening, extensions, and other types of hair services. They may also spend time teaching their clients how to style their hair and make their cut look good when they take it home. A good stylist will have at least ten clients in a day and spend a decent amount of time with each of them in order to make them feel really well taken care of and not like they are being rushed or pushed out of the chair as soon as they have paid. Taking extra time to make sure a client is satisfied can go a long way to ensuring that they return time and again.
Some stylists also make it a point to do small head massages, give a few tips or free products and demonstrate how to use them, and do other little things throughout the day that break up their work. Some hairstylists will also teach classes and work at the schools they learned from helping others get into their profession. Others may decide to open up and run their own salon which can consume a large portion of their day as they take care of business and financial matters. Running a new salon is a huge amount of work and requires a great deal of time and patience which can take a cosmetologist away from their normal practice of styling and cutting hair and place their focus more on the business side of the cosmetology industry.
There are many unique and interesting aspects of the job of a cosmetologist and one of the best ways to learn about them is to simply talk to someone that has been working as a stylist or a professional in the industry for a few years and ask a lot of questions. Get a feel for what they like and don’t like about their job and see if it would work for you and your likes and dislikes. If so then go ahead and ask about where they went to school and if they have any helpful suggestions or if they might be able to get you a job somewhere once you graduate. Do a little investigating into the field and you may be surprised about what you learn.
