What Do Beauticians Do
Is Cosmetology School Right For You?
In recessions and times of financial difficulty there are a lot of people who run and jump to go to cosmetology or esthetics school because they hear about what a lucrative career field it is, how it’s so easy to get a job, how quickly (and cheaply) you can get through school and so forth. This leads a lot of people to sign up for beauty schools thinking that they’ve found a way to make easy money only to leave halfway through the first term with a lot of disappointed hopes. Beauty school is absolutely not a way of sliding into a degree without any effort and making money “playing” with peoples hair. The cosmetology profession is one that is very competitive, challenging, and requires a great deal of work to be successful in. However, that being said, if cosmetology is something that you love and you want to spend your time making people feel beautiful then cosmetology school may be a great choice for you.
If you aren’t going into a cosmetology or a hair or make-up program with illusions of lots of money, hardly any time spent working, and a job that allows you to sit around all day chatting with your friends about your hair and nails then you’ll be much better off and more successful in school than if you go in expecting a degree and a job to be handed to you on a silver platter. It’s important to remember that cosmetology, like any other profession, requires a lot of hard work, patience, and dedication. If you’re going in for any reason other than a genuine interest and dedication to the field you’d better thing twice. Cosmetology school is hard work and a very physically demanding environment.
Cosmetology schools can also be very expensive depending on where you go. There are some schools that have extremely expensive tuitions based on their popularity or their ties to famous stylists and the fees and costs for supplies far outweigh those for an average degree because not only are you paying for tuition and books you’re also paying for all your own supplies to practice whatever it is you’re going to school for and in cosmetology that can be a lot. A low end school has kits starting around eight or nine hundred dollars but high end ones can cost over three thousand or more just for the supplies alone. It’s certainly not something to jump into without making sure it’s a career you are dedicated to and ready to pursue.
If you aren’t certain about your chosen career path then take the time to meet with not only some people that are currently in beauty school but also with people who have already left it and are working in the industry. Asking these people about where they went to school, what they liked and didn’t like, if they’d go back and do it again and important questions about their life after school in the beauty industry can make a big difference when it comes to how you make your decisions regarding school. Pay attention to what others in the industry say and be wise when it comes to deciding whether or not you’ll go to cosmetology school.
