Finding A Job After Cosmetology School

For many students a big concern is that they won’t be able to find a job after they leave cosmetology school and that they’ll be stuck with a large burden of student loans and no way to pay them back. That can be a scary future for a student that isn’t certain about what the job market will look like for them after they graduate. Fortunately cosmetology is a very quickly expanding market and they are constantly in need of lots of new graduates to fill opening salon positions. Because of this it’s usually not much of a difficulty for freshly graduated students to find a job that suits them.

Many beauty schools and cosmetology programs have job placement services for their recent graduates but it’s important to check with the admissions departments of the schools you are applying to just to make sure that they offer these options and to ask what their job placement rate is after graduation. Asking local graduates of such schools if they had difficulty finding a job or have any helpful resources in that area is a very wise thing to do as well.

It’s also important to decide what kind of job it is that you’d like to have. Do you want to work on an hourly rate in a salon or would you rather be in business for yourself - perhaps you might want to even own your very own salon and spend your days running it. Whatever you decide to do it’s important to plan for that in advance and be certain that you’ve taken the necessary steps to put yourself on the right track for such a job. If you’re just looking for an hourly rate you’ll probably be fine getting something through the job placement services at your school but if you want to set your own hours and have your own clients you’ll be working for yourself which means you’ll need a business license and that the way you do your taxes and structure your work life will be very different. It will also affect the costs you’ll be paying when you come out of college. Most students know how important it is to get a job quickly so they can start paying their loans down but a lot of them don’t factor in costs that may be associated with getting their first job.

That kit that you got upon starting school may have looked all shiny and spiffy then but now it’s probably been pretty worn out and you probably have a need for some new supplies. If you work for a salon that retains you at a certain hourly rate you’ll probably have most (if not all) of your supplies provided for you, which is customary for most salons that hire people by the hour but independent salons are a bit different. Most salons that aren’t run by a big chain will rent out spaces or booths in their salon for a monthly rate and in these kinds of circumstances you’ll be providing your own supplies and equipment to use on your clients.

Many new students run out to their favorite salon to ask for a job only to find out that they have to pay a monthly rental fee to work there and that they have to purchase all their own supplies as well. These kinds of costs are expensive and usually aren’t something students are budgeting for way in advance. Unexpected expenses like these can mean that a student has to take a job they aren’t interested in to save and make ends meet until they can afford to go work at another salon or have enough steady clients to do so. This is why it’s so important to plan ahead for getting your first job at a salon. You’ll be much better off and much happier with the results if you do.
