There are so many fun and interesting aspects of the cosmetology field that go unnoticed and with few entering into their fields except by accident which is such a shame considering the opportunities many students have to make lucrative careers for themselves in these less publicized careers. In this article we’ll go over not only the top and most popular careers in cosmetology but also some of the lesser known ones that may prove to be even more enticing.

Of course the most well known career in the industry is that of a hair stylist. Someone who works in a salon and spends their days cutting, coloring, highlighting, perming, and otherwise altering a clients hair. This is what most people go to cosmetology or beauty school for and it’s the most common of careers for someone in that industry. However there are lots of specific avenues that many people don’t even think about when it comes to hairstyling and though some of them are much more selective and competitive there is still a fair amount of room for people who are dedicated enough to purse a less than mainstream approach. Some of these can be styling hair or celebrities, working for a magazine styling for their shoots, working on a runway with the models, and many more. There are limitless options when it comes to this type of work and you don’t have to follow the typical route straight from beauty school into a salon. It’s very wise to take your time and explore some of your options before you make any decisions about where you want to work and how you want your cosmetology career to develop.

Another aspect of cosmetology is the practice of being a nail technician. This is a less common avenue for people to pursue simply because it isn’t often deem lucrative enough and as a single person it usually isn’t. However, if you were to open a nail salon, work as a distributor, or create new designs or products for the nail industry you would be putting yourself in an entirely different playing field. You open yourself up to new job possibilities and opportunities and can ensure that you’ll never be without a way of making money if you continue down such a path as an innovator. Nail technicians can also teach classes on safety and hygiene as a nail tech which is a very important part of the profession as well as teaching general skills or conducting a course that helps students prepare for their license exams.

If hair and nails don’t interest you quite as much you may want to consider going into esthetics, which is the art of skin and body care. Many people that chose this profession just head straight for a spa but if you're lucky you’ll find other options being presented to you. There are plenty of things and specific areas you can specialize in when it comes to esthetics. You can run a spa or retreat, design new methods of skin care and enhance the treatments that are already available. You can also focus on specific aspects of the field like treating certain skin disorders, preventing aging, working with doctors at medical spas, or with burn victims. There are lots of different areas you can specialize in within this field. You can also simply work at a spa and provide people with calming and relaxing treatments if you  like and there’s nothing wrong with that.

One aspect of the cosmetology field that few people consider going into is the area of business and ownership. Most people head straight to cosmetology school to work in the salons but few people that haven’t already maneuvered the industry for a few years ever consider opening up their own salon. For a lot of people this can be a really great career and something that they can stay with for the rest of their lives if they really enjoy it. It helps to have been through cosmetology school and have some experience working a salon before you decide to open one up but it’s not absolutely necessary. It does help to have an idea of the inner workings of a salon too because this can determine how you make different decisions and proceed with business plans, employees, investors, locations and so forth. All of these things are variables that can be made easier to determine with extra experience in the cosmetology field so it can be helpful to have the experience. Many students never even consider running their own salon but it can be a wonderful and fascinating job that provides a lot of joy for the owner over the long run.

The overall idea here is that when you enter the cosmetology industry you aren’t limited to the typical jobs and careers that are often described. There are many different paths and avenues that your career can take and the opportunities for creativity and innovation are virtually endless. You can specialize in a field or keep your options open while trying out a little bit of everything. Whatever you decide to do make sure that you follow your passions and enjoy yourself!
