What Do Beauticians Do
Cosmetology Supplies
One of the most overwhelming things when you start cosmetology school is how many supplies you need for your classes and how expensive they all can be. Unlike other areas of school where all you need is a few books with cosmetology you need all the tools and supplies of the trade just so that you can learn and practice. This can mean dozens of different supplies in many areas of the industry, some of which you may have to replace as you go through your cosmetology program, and that’s not even including things like books, paper, pencils and so forth. Plus many of what you need for cosmetology programs doesn’t run cheap. Hair dryers, flat irons, curlers, hair dyes, rollers, brushes, and many more are all necessary for the program and most of them are pretty expensive, especially if you get the quality brands which are a must for students who will be using them on a consistent basis.
It’s also important to make sure you get exactly the right kinds of supplies. Many cosmetology programs or schools will provide a kit that the students can purchase. These kits can run anywhere from a few hundred dollars to well up in the thousands so it’s very important that you get the right one and that you’re certain you have everything you need prior to beginning the program. Sometimes schools wont have enough of these kits for all the students which may mean that you have to go and buy your supplies elsewhere, individually, and usually at much greater cost to the student so its worth making sure that you are able to get one of these packages directly from your school. If for some reason you aren’t able to do that then you’ll want to go to a beauty retailer or outlet that is geared toward professionals. Don’t just head down to any random salon or supply store because you’ll end up paying the consumer price which is way more expensive than if you were to get it at a wholesale price. Ask your school which stores the recommend and shop around before you buy anything to be sure you’re getting the best deal. If you’re lucky and you have financial aid or a grant of some sort paying for your schooling then it's likely that you’ll be able to get these covered for you. If you are a particularly needy student and you can demonstrate that to your school they may give you a discount or even give you your supplies for free.
These supplies are often things that you’ll need to be replenishing throughout the semester so you’ll want to make sure that you have some money set aside during classes so that you can purchase these things if you need them. It’s never fun to constantly have to be borrowing tools and supplies from teachers and other students. however when you buy these types of supplies and what not be sure that you’re getting not only the right kind but also the quality and quantity that you truly need. Don’t skimp out and buy the cheapest thing you can simply to save money because in the long run you’ll have to replace it sooner and you will end up spending more buying replacements and fixes for it than you would have if you had just bought the more expensive tool in the first place. These kinds of things may seem like an area that you can skimp and save money but they really are places you want to invest. Remember that the tools that you purchase will not only serve you through cosmetology school they will also take you into your career as a hairstylist. Your tools will be useful until you have to replace them as your clientele grows or until they were out or you need something a bit higher end.
When it comes to using your supplies in school it’s helpful to have a big duffle bag of sorts to be able to carry everything you need around in it with you and to make sure that the bag has your name very clearly on it. You want to make sure that pretty much everything you own (including books, hair dryers, curling irons, etc) all have your name on them as well. You can do this by simply writing your name and number on some masking tape or blue painters tape and then placing that on the handle or a place that it can be easily seen. This will help you avoid losing your items and when you leave school and need to look professional you can simply pull the masking tape off and use a bit of rubbing alcohol to clear away any residue that might be remaining on any of your tools or appliances. You want to avoid loaning or lending any of your tools or supplies to other students because while this is a very kind and generous thing to do it can cause a lot of problems in a competitive and intense school setting such as this. If you find yourself in a situation where you have the opportunity to get some good practice in but you can’t because you’ve loaned one thing or another out then you’ll be the one who loses out and misses a chance to learn something new or get in some extra practice time. You can also end up losing a lot of money this way because people rarely treat others possessions with the care they would treat their own and if something gets returned to you damaged or broken you are the one who is responsible for replacing or repairing it. Be careful if you do decide to lend things out and try not to do it very often.
Remember that your supplies in cosmetology school are akin to you books as they will very often be what you’re learning from. Get the best when you can afford it and always treat your supplies with care and remember to have fun with them!
